Bauchi State Governor ‘Folds’, Denies Threatening Tinubu, Pledges Commitment to Tax Reforms
The Bauchi State Government has dismissed allegations that Governor Bala Mohammed issued threats to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the controversial Tax Reform Bill, asserting that the governor’s statements were misinterpreted. The government emphasized Governor Mohammed’s respect for the presidency and his commitment to fostering dialogue on national issues.
On December 26, Governor Mohammed criticized the proposed Tax Reform Bill, describing it as harmful to the interests of the North and other economically vulnerable states. He warned that the bill, if implemented in its current form, could incite unrest. The presidency subsequently responded, urging the governor to adopt a more statesmanlike approach and retract his remarks.
In a five-page statement issued by Mukhtar Gidado, the Governor’s Media Aide, the Bauchi State Government clarified that Mohammed’s comments were meant as constructive criticism, not a threat. The statement emphasized the governor’s dedication to equitable policymaking, aimed at mitigating the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
“It is the height of mischief that Governor Bala Mohammed’s candid advice on the dangers of proceeding with bad decisions or policies that could worsen the plight of the masses has been taken out of context as a threat to the presidency,” the statement read. It added that the governor’s remarks were precautionary, driven by his understanding of the frustrations stemming from the country’s economic challenges.
The statement also highlighted the governor’s alignment with concerns raised by other state leaders, including some governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), over the proposed reforms. It questioned the presidency’s decision to single out Governor Mohammed, suggesting it could be politically motivated due to his affiliation with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Criticizing the handling of the reform process, the statement accused the Federal Government of bypassing critical dialogue with stakeholders and subnational groups. It argued that the National Economic Council (NEC), which recommended revisiting the bill, was ignored, raising questions about the government’s commitment to inclusive governance.
The statement defended Mohammed’s record as a statesman, highlighting his consistent advocacy for policies that strengthen national unity and constitutionalism. It concluded by reaffirming the governor’s readiness to work with the Federal Government to address the nation’s challenges, including the contentious tax reforms, while safeguarding the interests of the Nigerian people.
