Barely a Month After Deadly Tanker Explosion, Six Die in Ugwu-Onyeama Accident on Enugu-Onitsha Road
A tragic accident on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway claimed the lives of six people when a truck carrying foodstuffs lost control and overturned at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis around 8 a.m. yesterday.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Enugu State, Franklin Agbakoba, confirmed the incident, which comes just weeks after a fuel tanker explosion in the same area killed 23 people.
According to Agbakoba, FRSC officials rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call. Three injured victims were rescued and taken to Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, for treatment. The truck, which was transporting vegetables, fruits, and traders, was reportedly speeding when it lost control and tumbled.
The crash involved nine people—eight men and one woman. Five men and the lone female victim were confirmed dead, while the three surviving men were hospitalized. Relatives of the deceased took custody of their bodies for burial.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident resulted from excessive speed and brake failure. Agbakoba expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
