Bandits Reappear on Taraba Mountain, Hoist Flag Signaling Return
Reports have surfaced of armed bandits returning to the mountainous areas of Zing Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State, where they have reportedly hoisted a red flag, symbolizing their renewed presence and control. The group, which had previously been forced out through combined efforts of local hunters and security personnel, has reappeared near the border of Taraba and Adamawa states, sparking fresh security concerns.
Local resident James Samuel, speaking with newsmen, shared that the bandits originally occupied this area during last year’s harvest season. They were, however, dislodged after a prolonged battle involving local hunters and security forces. Now, Samuel reports, the bandits have begun moving back into the area on motorcycles, with their presence noted as recently as nine days ago.
“Our hunters engaged them when they noticed their activities, and the bandits raised a red flag on top of the mountain,” he said, noting the renewed sense of danger this signals for the community.
The chairman of the Taraba State Hunters Association, Adamu Dantala, confirmed these developments, saying his association received similar reports from residents. Local hunters have already been mobilized and are preparing for further engagement with the group, determined to curb any potential threat.
However, Taraba State Police Command has not yet confirmed the reappearance of bandits in the area. According to SP Usman Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer, the state command has not received any formal reports on the movement of suspected bandits into Zing. He added that Operation Safe Taraba units remain stationed at strategic points throughout the region to monitor and address any suspicious activity.
Just last year, Zing and other LGAs, including Yorro and Ardo-Kola, were heavily impacted by similar incursions. Hundreds of armed bandits were reported to have taken over various mountainous areas, which only ceased after extensive joint operations by local hunters and security forces.
