Bandits Overtake Major Military Camp in Niger State, Forcing Mass Exodus of Communities

Armed bandits have reportedly taken control of the Nagwamase Military Cantonment, a major military training camp in Kontagora, Niger State, driving out around 23 surrounding communities and causing widespread panic in the area.

The takeover was disclosed during a recent Niger State House of Assembly session, where Abdullah Isah, representing Kontagora II, raised an urgent motion. He revealed that the bandits have set up eight separate camps within the cantonment, creating a “serious security challenge” for the communities within Kontagora and Mariga Local Government Areas. The Nagwamase Military Cantonment, a key training base for the Nigerian military, spans a vast area impacting both LGAs and housing several local communities.

According to Isah, residents of the area have faced relentless attacks, kidnappings, and property destruction over the past month, with many locals still held captive. He urged the Niger State government to coordinate with military authorities to drive out the armed group and reclaim the cantonment. The Assembly member also called for additional military support, including enhanced logistics and modern equipment, to restore safety in the region.

In response to the escalating crisis, hundreds of residents from the affected communities, mostly farmers, have abandoned their homes and livelihoods, fleeing in fear for their safety.
