Bandits Kill 30 Farmers, Islamic Cleric in Zamfara, Herders, Cattle Slaughtered in Plateau
Bandits have mercilessly attacked two farming communities in Zamfara State, claiming the lives of at least 30 farmers, among them, a highly respected Islamic cleric. The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, has plunged the state into mourning and raised concerns about the escalating insecurity in the region.
The attacks, confirmed by Police Spokesman ASP Yazid Abu Abubakar, targeted Maradun and Tsafe local government areas. Mallam Makwashi Maradun Mai Jan Baki, a renowned Islamic scholar, fell victim to the brutality alongside numerous others. Additionally, the bandits left a trail of destruction in Gidangoga village, where three more lives were claimed.
Residents, exhausted by the relentless assaults, lamented the frequency of attacks, forcing many communities to evacuate in fear of reprisals. The violence extended to Bilbis village in Tsafe LGA, where 20 civilians fell victim to the bandits’ brutality, leaving behind a scene of devastation and despair.
In a heroic act of self-defense, residents of Maradun engaged the bandits, resulting in the death of 24 attackers and the recovery of their vehicles. However, the losses suffered by the community remain profound, with Mallam Makwashi’s children still missing, adding to the anguish of the already grieving populace.
Meanwhile, in Plateau State, a separate tragedy unfolded as gunmen targeted herders in Kwal District of Bassa Local Government Area. The assailants, in a heartless act, killed two herders and slaughtered over 200 cattle, leaving the Fulani community reeling from the devastating loss. Leaders of the Fulani community, Nura Abdullahi and Garba Abdullahi, called for urgent action from security agencies to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace to the region.
The failure of security agencies to respond effectively to these atrocities has raised concerns among residents, who fear for their safety amid the escalating violence. With communities shattered and lives lost, urgent measures are needed to address the root causes of insecurity and bring perpetrators to justice.
In a separate incident in Kogi State, the abduction of nine students from Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) has further underscored the rampant lawlessness plaguing the country. The state government, in collaboration with security forces, has launched a rescue operation to ensure the safe return of the abducted students, promising swift and decisive action against the perpetrators.
