Banditry: DSS DG Orders Release and N3 Million Compensation for Three Wrongfully Detained Suspects

The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu, and Jaja Sarki Bamo, who were arrested in June 2025 over alleged involvement in banditry and kidnapping. A DSS panel reviewed their cases and found that the arrests had been made in error, prompting the DG to authorize their immediate release and a compensation payment of N3 million.

Sources familiar with the investigation said there was no evidence linking the three men to the crimes for which they were initially detained. The move reflects the agency’s ongoing efforts to correct past mistakes and uphold justice for those wrongfully accused. Over recent months, similar reviews have led to the release of several other innocent suspects, while individuals found culpable continue to face prosecution.

Insiders noted that compensation payments have become a standard practice under Ajayi’s leadership, citing previous instances where victims of mistaken agency actions received reparations. Observers say this approach underscores a commitment to accountability and proper procedure within the DSS, while encouraging officers to act responsibly.

After their release, the three men expressed gratitude to the DSS leadership for the fair treatment and compensation, highlighting that they were well cared for during detention and cooperated fully throughout the investigations. Umar Ibrahim stated that their basic needs were met and that no abuse occurred during their time in custody.
