Bandit Violence Sparks Vigilante Retaliation in Sokoto’s Nomadic Settlements

Members of the vigilante group known as Yansakai have launched reprisal attacks on nomadic communities. This retaliation follows a vicious attack by bandits that resulted in the death of three individuals and the abduction of several others in the Soro community, located in the Binji Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to local sources, the bandits struck the peaceful Soro community at approximately 1 a.m. on a fateful Monday. They descended upon the village in significant numbers, accompanied by livestock suspected to have been stolen from other communities.

The brutal assault left three residents dead and at least three others injured. Shockingly, the bandits also abducted numerous individuals, including an entire family.

In the aftermath of this devastating attack, Yansakai, the local vigilante group, swiftly mobilized and launched counterattacks on neighboring Fulani communities. This resulted in casualties among the Fulani residents, and their homes were set ablaze.

Anonymous residents in the area have suggested that the bandit attack may have been premeditated, as there were rumors of a Fulani meeting shortly before the assault. Tensions between the two communities had been simmering, further fueling suspicions of coordinated planning.

As a result of the escalating violence, many residents from the affected villages have fled in fear of potential reprisal attacks.

However, in a positive development, normalcy has been partially restored in the region, thanks to the deployment of security operatives to the area. The Sokoto Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the incident, revealing that security forces, including the military, had successfully repelled the initial bandit attack.

Rufa’i stated, “There were reprisal attacks, but our men were able to calm the situation after the Police Commissioner, Ali Kaigama, held discussions with leaders from both communities. The commissioner has also left four patrol vehicles behind to maintain law and order in the affected communities.”

The situation remains tense, and the authorities are working diligently to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents in the Sokoto region.
