“Backlog Will Be Paid” – FG Assures Corps Members of ₦77,000 Allowance
The Federal Government has pledged to pay the backlog of the revised ₦77,000 monthly allowance to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), following months of delay since the increase was announced. The new rate, which replaced the former ₦33,000 allowance, was approved in September 2024 but has yet to be implemented, despite several assurances.
Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande confirmed the commitment during an appearance on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, stating that both serving corps members and those in the scheme when the increment was announced will receive backdated payments. While Olawande did not provide a specific timeline for the disbursement, he emphasized that the government is working on ensuring the backlog is cleared.
“You saw the new DG saying that you will get it, and they’re asking him a question ‘What are those that are going out now, are they going to receive it [backlog]?’ He said we have your details,” the minister explained. “The backlog, we will work on it and make sure it is paid. It may not be immediate but it will happen.”
The promise comes after months of pressure from corps members and the public, who have repeatedly called out the delay since the allowance was reviewed upward.
