Awka: One Dead, 29 Injured as Knights of the Catholic Church Involved in Road Accident
A tragic accident involving members of the Knights of the Catholic Church has left one person dead and 29 others injured in Awka, Anambra State. The incident occurred at the UNIZIK Temporary Site Junction when a Coastal bus, belonging to the Cross River State College of Nursing, Ogoja, lost control and crashed into an inter-city commercial vehicle.
The bus was transporting church members from Ogoja, Cross River State, to Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area for the burial of a fellow Knight, Dr. Ezigbo Sunny. The crash claimed the life of 70-year-old Elliot Ushie Agana from Ogoja, while the injured were rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical care.
A survivor, Pastor Christian Ikere, revealed that passengers had raised concerns about the bus’s faulty brakes before departure. Despite repeated warnings, the driver allegedly ignored their pleas. Another passenger, Chidiebere Chukwu, recounted that one of the three coaster buses in their convoy lost control and signaled other vehicles to clear the way. Unfortunately, at the UNIZIK junction, the bus collided with a stationary commercial vehicle, leading to the crash.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
