ATBU Tragedy: Final-Year Student Stabbed to Death Defending Girlfriend, Police Say

The Bauchi State Police Command has disclosed that Joseph Agabaidu, a 500-level Geology student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), was fatally stabbed while attempting to retrieve his girlfriend’s handbag from unidentified assailants. Contrary to initial reports, the police clarified that the motive was not theft of Agabaidu’s mobile phone but an attempt to snatch his girlfriend’s handbag.

The incident occurred around 7:00 pm on Saturday as Agabaidu was returning to his lodge near Yelwan Tudu market in the Bauchi metropolis. Despite immediate medical attention at the ATBU Teaching Hospital, the student succumbed to severe chest injuries inflicted during the confrontation.

This tragic event triggered a protest by fellow students at the Yelwa Campus, expressing their frustration over perceived inadequate security in and around the campus. In response to the unrest, the university management, citing disruption of peace by “miscreants,” took the drastic step of temporarily shutting down the institution, instructing students to evacuate the campus immediately.

Bauchi State Police, in a statement by Public Relations Officer Ahmed Wakil, clarified that Agabaidu was with his girlfriend when the assailants targeted her handbag, leading to the fatal altercation. The police condemned the violent protest that ensued, emphasizing the need for professionalism and adherence to legal processes in conflict resolution.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Muhammed, met with student leaders to address concerns and assure them of increased security measures. The police vowed to intensify efforts to apprehend the culprits responsible for Agabaidu’s tragic demise, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring justice is served.

As the ATBU community grapples with this devastating loss, investigations continue to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing, and students await the reopening of their institution following the temporary closure.
