President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reacted to the death of retired Major-General Abubakar Rabe, who died while in the custody of kidnappers in Katsina State, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable.
Rabe was abducted alongside his wife while travelling to his hometown. Security authorities confirmed that he died in captivity, while his wife remains in the hands of the abductors.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed condolences to the bereaved family and security agencies.
He said the President was particularly saddened by the condition of the retired officer’s wife, who is still being held.
The statement also made clear the administration’s position on negotiations with armed groups. It noted that the government would not agree to demands involving the release of detained suspects in exchange for hostages.
According to the statement, Tinubu said:
“Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever.”
“No mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.”
He added that the death of the retired general should mark a shift in how the country responds to insecurity.
“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, never to negotiate with them on any terms.”
Tinubu also reaffirmed that the government remains committed to intensifying operations against armed groups across the country and restoring security in affected communities.
The presidency described the incident as a loss to the nation and urged continued unity in confronting insecurity.
