The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a nursery and primary school teacher who allegedly died after being assaulted by the parents of a pupil she disciplined.
The victim, Maryam Usman, 30, was a teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The command's spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu, disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja.
According to Saliu, the case was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Abdullahi Ishaka and two women allegedly stormed the school and assaulted the teacher over her decision to discipline a pupil.
Usman reportedly sustained severe injuries during the attack. She was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further medical care.
However, she later died from the injuries she sustained.
Following the report, police officers visited both the school and the deceased's residence as part of the investigation.
Saliu said arrangements were being made to move the body to the General Hospital in Ankpa for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
She added that the suspects fled before police officers arrived at the scene and are currently being sought.
"Efforts are ongoing to apprehend them," the police spokesperson said.
She added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the suspects are arrested.
The police said a comprehensive investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
