Angry youths have set the Isan Police Station in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State on fire following the alleged shooting of a young man by police officers.
The protest erupted after a video showing a man lying in a pool of blood circulated widely on social media, particularly on X. An X user, Stephen Ayeni, claimed the victim had gone to a football field to watch a match when he was allegedly shot.
In response, residents reportedly stormed the police station and set the facility ablaze, insisting they would continue protesting until justice is served.
A police officer, who spoke anonymously, said the attack occurred around 6 p.m. He said armed attackers assaulted the station, leaving one officer critically injured and currently in a coma.
The officer added that several vehicles were destroyed during the incident, including a bus hired by police personnel from Abuja.
According to him, operatives of the Police Mobile Force responded after receiving a distress call and engaged the attackers as they approached Isan from Oye, preventing them from taking over the community.
He also disclosed that some officers on duty fled during the attack but said security operatives have since regained control of the area and restored calm.
The police station sustained extensive damage, with two vehicles burnt within the premises. The fire also destroyed the station's generator, windows, doors and ceilings. Three additional vehicles parked outside the station were also razed.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ekiti State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
