The Presidency has launched a training programme for more than 100 social media influencers from Northern Nigeria as part of efforts to improve public awareness of the policies and achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration and address the spread of misinformation online.

The workshop, held in Kano on Sunday, is being organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment.

Speaking at the event, the President's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Enlightenment, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, said the programme is designed to strengthen participants' digital communication skills while equipping them to identify and counter false or misleading information circulating on social media.

According to him, the training will expose participants to effective social media engagement, fact-based communication and the responsible use of digital platforms.

"We see a lot of social media videos, AI-generated pictures and clips designed to create disaffection or misinform the public. These skills will help them use social media more effectively for information dissemination," he said.

Abdulaziz added that the workshop would also provide participants with information on the Tinubu administration's policies and achievements, enabling them to better inform the public about government programmes.

He said the training also aims to promote national unity while encouraging responsible online engagement, stressing that although freedom of expression remains a democratic right, social media users should avoid spreading false information.

Also speaking at the event, development scholar Dr. Musa Abdullahi-Sufi said the initiative seeks to encourage influencers to highlight development-focused stories and verified information about Nigeria.

He noted that the programme includes sessions on ethical social media use, fact-checking and responsible digital engagement.

The training brings together social media influencers from across Northern Nigeria as part of the Federal Government's broader communication strategy.
