The deceased, originally from Abia State, lived in the house with his family. He was reported to have been struggling with blindness caused by glaucoma and had previously worked as a commercial driver before losing his sight.
Family accounts indicate that he slept in the same room with his wife on Thursday night but was no longer in bed by early morning. His wife, unaware of when he left, raised an alarm after a search of the house and surrounding area failed to locate him.
Residents of Alakuta Community joined the search effort. The situation changed when a neighbour noticed that the cover of the house’s deep well was open, despite no water being drawn that morning. The wife also confirmed she had kept the key and could not account for how the well had been accessed.
The well was opened, and the man’s body was found inside. Community members assisted in retrieving the remains before the matter was reported to the police at Apete.
Officers from the Apete Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, arrived at the scene and recovered the body. The remains were later deposited at the morgue of State Hospital Adeoyo for preservation and autopsy.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed receipt of a suspected suicide report through its spokesperson, stating that an investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
