Suspected Boko Haram fighters overran a military position in Mandara-Girau, near Biu in Borno State, in an overnight assault that left several soldiers dead.

Security sources said the attackers struck the facility in the early hours of Friday, June 5, opening fire on troops during heavy rainfall. The assailants were reported to have arrived in large numbers, catching the personnel on duty off guard.

According to one account, about nine soldiers were killed and several others sustained injuries. The attackers also reportedly decapitated the victims after the assault.

Part of the military installation was briefly taken over during the incident before the attackers withdrew, the sources added.

Footage said to be from the scene showed multiple bodies laid on the ground and covered with blankets.

Boko Haram has not commented on the incident. Military authorities have also yet to release an official statement.
