Scores of residents were killed in the early hours of Wednesday after suspected armed attackers invaded Sai Community in Mbajir Council Ward, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

Residents said the attackers stormed the community around 2 a.m., moving from house to house and opening fire, forcing many people to flee into nearby bushes.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, said at least 10 bodies had been recovered by daybreak, while several injured victims were taken to a hospital in Katsina-Ala for treatment. He added that the death toll could rise as search efforts continued.

As of the time of reporting, the Benue State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the attack. Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful.

Reacting to the incident, Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings and directed security agencies to strengthen their presence in Sai Community and neighbouring areas to prevent further attacks.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor ordered security operatives to launch a manhunt for those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice. He also called for increased protection for farmers to enable them to continue farming without fear.

The governor described the attack as a brutal assault on innocent residents, noting that it came at a critical period when many farmers had returned to their communities for the planting season.

According to the statement, the attack left scores dead and many others injured. The government alleged that the assailants were terrorists posing as herders.

Governor Alia extended his condolences to the families of those killed and wished those receiving medical treatment a speedy recovery. He assured residents that his administration remained committed to securing lives, protecting communities, and restoring peace across the state.

Katsina-Ala Local Government Area has experienced repeated attacks linked to armed groups, making it one of the most volatile areas in Benue State.
