A senatorial aspirant, Isaac Nwachukwu, has taken the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission to the Federal High Court in Owerri over the outcome of the party’s primary election for Imo North.
In a suit filed through his counsel, Cajethan Oguzie, Nwachukwu alleged that he was sidelined after what he described as his emergence as a consensus candidate. He also claimed he paid ₦5 million for the nomination form and later made a ₦20 million financial contribution to the party.
He told the court that part of the funds he transferred in support of the party was later reflected differently in official records. According to him, ₦20 million attributed to his payment was credited to another aspirant, Matthew Omegara, while ₦10 million linked to Omegara was instead recorded under his name.
Nwachukwu stated that he participated in the screening exercise and was cleared to contest the primaries. He added that his name was later listed as the party’s candidate for Imo North after what he described as ratification of his consensus status.
He, however, alleged that the result was altered afterward and his name replaced with that of Omegara, despite his earlier recognition as winner of the primary.
In his affidavit, he also referenced a meeting involving the party’s national leadership, including Seriake Dickson, where he was reportedly told that his candidacy was affected following objections from a party figure who claimed not to know him.
Other figures mentioned in the filing include members of the screening committee reportedly led by Sam Egwu and Buba Galadima.
Nwachukwu is asking the court to declare him the authentic candidate for the Imo North senatorial district and to restrain the party from presenting any other nominee. He is also seeking an order directing INEC to recognise him as the valid candidate for the 2027 general election, pending the final determination of the case.
