APP Endorses Local Government Poll, Denounces Factional Group in Rivers
In a statement released on Friday, the Action Peoples Party (APP) has disassociated itself from a factional group in Rivers State that falsely claims to represent the legitimate leadership of the party. The APP’s National Chairman, Chief Uche Nnadi, described the group as “impostors” who have never held any official positions within the party.
Chief Nnadi further called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and prosecute the individuals involved in the factional activities. He reiterated that Chief Sunny Nwokekoro is the officially recognized state chairman of the APP, following his replacement of the former chairman, Hon. Kenneth Atata.
The APP also expressed its support for the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission’s (RSIEC) decision to proceed with the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.
“Our National Working Committee fully endorses the RSIEC’s decision to hold the election, in line with the judgement of Justice I.P.C. Igwe, which mandates the commission to conduct the poll. We secured this judgement and are entitled to its benefits,” the statement read.
The party also urged the police to remain neutral in the elections and cautioned against taking partisan positions, stressing that the credibility of the police force should not be compromised.
Nnadi emphasized that the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies are obligated to ensure peace, law, and order throughout the election process, as mandated by the court. He encouraged Rivers State residents to participate in the local government council elections, urging them to exercise their civic rights.
