“Apologize and Pay N2.5 Million to Tenant for Defamation” – Anambra Court Orders Landlords’ Association

The Anambra State High Court in Otuocha has ordered the Registered Trustees of the Blessed Maryland Landlords’ Association and its chairman, Osita Enendu, to issue a formal written apology and pay N2.5 million to Sir Chidi Elochukwu (KSM) for defaming his character.

The court found that the Landlords’ Association had made defamatory statements against Sir Chidi, prompting him to seek legal redress. Barrister Seward Chukwunta of S.N. Chukwunta & Associates, who represented Sir Chidi, stated that the ruling highlights the serious nature of character assassination and the importance of protecting one’s reputation through the legal system.

Chukwunta noted, “This judgment serves as a reminder that individuals should exercise caution in their statements to avoid legal repercussions. The judiciary has reinforced the message that victims of defamation can and should seek justice.”

The court emphasized that in cases of libel—defamation in written form—damages are presumed, meaning the victim is entitled to compensation even without direct evidence of harm. This ruling is poised to encourage others who have faced similar defamation to take action against such injustices.
