APGA Secures Landmark Victory in Anambra South Senatorial By-Election
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has recorded a historic breakthrough in Anambra South Senatorial District, clinching the seat in Saturday’s by-election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu winner of the poll. Nwachukwu polled 90,408 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 19,812 votes while Donald Amamgbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 2,889 votes.
The election, contested by 16 political parties, was held to fill the vacant seat left by late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Ubah, who won re-election in 2023 under the Young Progressives Party (YPP), had later defected to APC before his death in 2024.
With this victory, Nwachukwu becomes the first APGA candidate to ever win Anambra South Senatorial District, and only the second to represent the party at the Senate from Anambra State. The first was Senator Victor Umeh, who won the Anambra Central rerun in 2018.
Nwachukwu, a former President General of Ukpor, also makes history as the first politician from Nnewi South to represent Anambra South in the National Assembly.
For years, the PDP dominated senatorial elections in Anambra State, with only a few exceptions. Nwachukwu’s win signals a new chapter for APGA, strengthening the party’s foothold in the state’s politics.
Onitsha North 1 Constituency By-Election
INEC also declared Barr. Ifeoma Mimi Azikiwe of APGA winner of the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency election. Azikiwe secured 7,774 votes, defeating ADC’s Mrs Justice Azuka, who polled 1,909 votes. APC’s Ezennia Chuka Ojekwe and YPP’s Njideka Ndiwe scored 1,371 and 655 votes** respectively.
Azikiwe will complete the remaining two years of late Justice Azuka’s tenure, who was tragically kidnapped and killed in December 2024. Upon inauguration, she will become the second female legislator in the current Anambra State House of Assembly.
Both victories further consolidate APGA’s influence in Anambra politics and are seen as a significant boost to the party ahead of future elections.
