APGA Crisis: Resign, You’re an Embarrassment – Chekwas Okorie Tells INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu
In a bold statement, Chief Chekwas Okorie, the former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has called for the immediate resignation of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Okorie’s demand follows allegations that Yakubu was found guilty of contempt of court for failing to comply with a court order recognizing Chief Edozie Njoku as the legitimate National Chairman of APGA. The Supreme Court had ruled in favor of Njoku, affirming his leadership position, yet INEC has reportedly not adhered to this decision.
Speaking to reporters at the Court of Appeal, where he and other APGA leaders submitted a petition over the weekend, Okorie expressed his outrage: “Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in a sane country, would not remain the presiding officer of the highest democratic institution, given that he has been found guilty of contempt of court since November last year.”
Okorie criticized the Court of Appeal for delaying the sentencing, emphasizing that it did not negate the initial guilty verdict. “Arresting sentencing is another shocker because if a judgement has been given and is awaiting sentencing, the upper court should allow the lower court to complete its process,” he stated.
He concluded with a direct appeal to Yakubu: “Mahmood must leave office. His continued presence is an embarrassment to this country. It is scandalous for a contemnor to remain as the Chairman of the highest democratic institution in Nigeria.”
