APC Spokesman Shot Dead in Pankshin Beer Parlour Attack
Sylvanus Namang, the spokesperson for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau, was fatally shot on Saturday night at a leisure spot in Pankshin Local Government Area. The armed assailants, believed to be kidnappers, targeted Mr. Namang in a brazen attack at a leisure spot owned by Sunny Okonkwo.
Plateau police spokesperson Alfred Alabo revealed that the attack unfolded when approximately seven individuals stormed the venue. Law enforcement promptly responded to the distress call, with Plateau Police Commissioner Hassan Steve Yabanet directing the Area Commander and DPO of Pankshin to rescue the victims and apprehend the suspects.
“The suspects fled with severe gunshot injuries, while the victim was rescued and rushed to the General Hospital, Pankshin, for treatment of both bullet and machete injuries,” said Mr. Alabo.
Despite efforts to save him, Sylvanus Namang succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the General Hospital in Pankshin.
Reacting to the tragic event, former Governor and APC chieftain Simon Lalong expressed shock and devastation. In a statement signed by his special adviser, Makut Simon Macha, Mr. Lalong called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident. Sylvanus Namang, an accomplished journalist, politician, and community leader, leaves behind a legacy that resonates beyond his political contributions.
The incident adds to the prevailing security challenges in Plateau State, following the Christmas Eve massacre that claimed numerous lives in an overnight assault by killer herdsmen. The state continues to grapple with violence linked to resource control issues.
