APC/NNPP Merger Talks: Party Chieftain Warns President Tinubu to Be Cautious with Kwankwaso
Reports have surfaced regarding a potential merger between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), with concerns raised about the motivations behind this move. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the NNPP, has allegedly met with President Bola Tinubu to discuss the possibility of collapsing the NNPP into the APC, reportedly in exchange for a ministerial position.
In light of these developments, Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, a former commissioner in the Ganduje administration and member of the APC, has advised President Tinubu to proceed with caution. Speaking to reporters in Kano, he emphasized the need for the president to include key APC leaders in any discussions with Kwankwaso, particularly the National Chairman, Dr. Umar Ganduje.
“The president would do well to include Kano APC leaders in all discussions with Kwankwaso, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and House Majority Leader Alhassan Ado Doguwa,” he stated. He also highlighted the importance of having local leaders present, noting that Kwankwaso’s history raises concerns about potential betrayal during negotiations.
Kwankwaso pointed out that many of Kwankwaso’s loyalists, including several elected officials from Nasarawa State, have recently defected to the APC. This trend indicates a decline in the NNPP’s influence, particularly in Kano, where defections have further weakened the party’s position.
“Kwankwaso is becoming jittery as he loses political relevance, which is why he is willing to accept any position offered by the APC government,” he added, urging President Tinubu to remain vigilant in these discussions.
