ANSIEC Publishes List of Candidates for LGA Polls
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has officially published the list of eligible candidates for the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) elections scheduled for September 28, 2024.
Genevieve Osakwe, the Chairman of ANSIEC, unveiled the list on Wednesday at the commission’s headquarters in Awka, Anambra’s capital. Osakwe called on the public to verify the list ahead of the elections and urged candidates to intensify their campaigns.
“The list is now available for public viewing,” Osakwe announced. She further encouraged voters to visit the ANSIEC headquarters or any of the 21 LGAs to confirm the candidates contesting for various positions.
“We are urging the electorate to actively participate in the election process by voting for their preferred candidates,” Osakwe added. She also assured Anambra residents that the commission is committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible election.
This announcement comes in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling on July 11, mandating that local government allocations be paid directly to LG councils and withholding funds from those governed by unelected officials appointed by state governors. Following the ruling, several states, including Delta, Kogi, Adamawa, and Imo, have accelerated plans to hold their own LGA elections.
