Another Top LP Senator Set to Join APC
Strong signs have emerged that Senator Neda Imasuen of the Labour Party (LP), representing Edo South Senatorial District, may be on the verge of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This comes as party stalwarts within the APC intensify efforts to woo him into their fold.
Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges, recently remarked that the Supreme Court ruling on the internal crisis within the LP may have arrived too late to salvage the party, citing significant internal damage that has already resulted in a wave of defections.
Sources close to the senator indicate he maintains strong ties with key APC figures in Edo State and has been frequently seen in public engagements alongside several of them. Notably, he previously served as a senior legislative aide to his predecessor, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, who is now with the APC. Imasuen also played a prominent role as Director General of the APC Campaign Council in the run-up to the September 21 governorship election.
Fueling speculation about his potential defection, Hon. Eugene Utubor, Special Adviser to Governor Monday Okpebholo on Political Mobilisation and Engagement, reportedly visited Imasuen on Tuesday night. The lengthy meeting was said to focus on persuading the senator to align with the APC and support Governor Okpebholo’s development agenda. A source familiar with the discussions described the meeting as “fruitful.”
Senator Imasuen, according to insiders, expressed appreciation for the outreach and lauded Governor Okpebholo’s early strides in office. “The governor has done remarkably well in such a short time,” he reportedly said. “It is crucial that we come together to ensure the success of his vision for our people. Every well-meaning Edo citizen is encouraged to rally around the governor as he works diligently for our collective progress.”
While no official announcement has been made, political watchers believe Senator Imasuen’s switch to the APC may be imminent.
