Anambra: Two-Storey Building Collapses in Awka Market: Many Feared Dead, Trapped
A devastating incident occurred in the Eke Amawbia market in Awka, Anambra State, on Thursday as a two-storey shop collapsed, leaving several feared dead and many trapped under the rubble.
The collapse, which happened around noon, buried numerous vegetable traders beneath the debris. Emergency responders managed to rescue one person, who was quickly taken to Amawbia Maternity Home for urgent medical care. However, many more are still believed to be trapped in the wreckage.
Eyewitnesses blamed the collapse on substandard construction, alleging that the building’s structural integrity had been compromised.
A significant police presence is at the scene, coordinating rescue efforts and maintaining order. The operation to find survivors continues, with emergency personnel working tirelessly amid the debris.
The market atmosphere is tense, with anxious onlookers waiting for news of their loved ones feared trapped in the building. The incident has shocked the community, prompting calls for an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating that two victims had been rescued so far and taken to the hospital for medical care. “In response to a distress call today 4/7/2024 at about 12:40 pm of a building collapse at Ekeoyibo market, Amawbia, Police Operatives have rescued two victims and taken them to the hospital for medical care,” Ikenga said. He added that the area has been cordoned off and rescue operations are still ongoing, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the on-the-spot assessment under the directive of Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam.
