Anambra Police Intensify Crackdown on Sit-at-Home Order
The Anambra State Police Command has launched a renewed campaign against the illegal Sit-at-Home directive, urging residents to resume their normal activities without fear. Leading this charge is the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, who has vowed to restore full normalcy across the state.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command emphasized that the enforcement effort is part of broader security strategies aimed at ensuring peace and stability in Anambra. CP Orutugu expressed deep concern over the negative impact of the directive on the state’s economy, education, and daily life. He stressed that continued compliance with such unlawful orders only serves to cripple businesses and hinder progress.
To counter criminal elements exploiting the situation, CP Orutugu outlined new security measures to protect residents. He reassured Ndi Anambra that law enforcement agencies are now in full control of the streets, particularly on Mondays and other affected days, to prevent intimidation. Business owners, market traders, transport operators, and civil servants were encouraged to defy the illegal order and resume their daily activities, with assurances of adequate security.
Highlighting the resilience and industrious nature of Anambra’s people, CP Orutugu urged residents to reclaim their economic and social freedom. He lamented the setbacks caused by the directive, particularly revenue losses and disruptions to commerce, and called for collective action to end its influence.
Beyond security operations, the Police Command is engaging local leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures, and other key stakeholders in dialogue to address the underlying fears sustaining the directive. CP Orutugu stressed that combating the issue requires a combination of security action, community collaboration, and public awareness.
The Commissioner warned that any individuals attempting to enforce the Sit-at-Home order through intimidation or violence would face the full weight of the law. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for business, education, and social activities. Residents were urged to report threats or intimidation to the Police, with assurances of swift responses from security operatives.
As part of the advocacy campaign, police teams visited various parts of the state to engage directly with the public, reinforcing the message that it is time to end the culture of staying at home out of fear.
