Anambra Police Bust Kidnap and Cult Syndicates, Recover Firearms in Major Crime Sweep
In a series of decisive operations, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with serious crimes including kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and vandalism. These arrests, made over the past week, also led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and a suspected stolen vehicle.
The arrests were part of the Command’s intensified efforts to clamp down on criminal activities, with a strong focus on intelligence-led and technology-driven investigations. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, described the week’s operations as a significant stride in their mission to enhance security across the state. “Our officers have shown remarkable commitment to reducing crime in Anambra State,” Ikenga said.
In one operation, two suspects were arrested in Nnewi after an investigation into the kidnapping of a victim who was later released on August 19, 2024, in Ihiala. The suspects, whose identities remain undisclosed, confessed to their roles in the abduction. “Their confessions have provided critical leads, helping us further the investigation,” Ikenga added.
In another high-profile raid on September 12, 2024, joint security operatives based in Aguata stormed a criminal hideout in Umunze, arresting five suspects. The individuals, identified as Okorie Miracle, Joshua Ifeanyi Ekwa, Aneke Okorie, Mmesoma Faithful, and Chukwuzekwu Mba, aged between 20 and 26, were caught with locally made firearms and vandalized electricity cables. Tools used for the criminal activities were also recovered during the raid. “The suspects have fully cooperated with our investigation, providing information that will help us track down other gang members and those involved in purchasing the stolen materials,” said Ikenga.
The success of these operations did not stop there. On September 13, 2024, operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) on patrol along the Nise/Agulu road apprehended 25-year-old Chigozie Ejikeme from Abagana. Ejikeme was found driving suspiciously and attempted to flee from a security checkpoint. After a thorough search, officers discovered a locally made Beretta pistol and live ammunition hidden on his person. During interrogation, Ejikeme confessed to being a member of the notorious Black Axe Secret Cult. The police also seized his vehicle, a black Lexus, which is under further investigation.
“The suspects are cooperating with authorities, and once investigations are completed, they will be charged in court,” Ikenga confirmed.
