Anambra Guber Aspirant John Chuma Nwosu Withdraws from Labour Party Primary Over Irregularities

John Chuma Nwosu, a frontline gubernatorial aspirant for the Labour Party in Anambra State, has announced his withdrawal from the party’s scheduled primary election. Nwosu’s decision comes on the heels of concerns over what he described as illegalities and procedural flaws in the lead-up to the primary.

In a letter dated April 4, 2025, Nwosu made it clear that after a careful review of the activities surrounding the primary, it had become evident that the process was marred by numerous irregularities. He specifically referenced the absence of a delegates’ congress across all 21 local government areas of the state, which is a crucial step in ensuring a transparent and fair election process. “It is cogent and verifiable that no delegates’ congress took place in any of the 21 LGAs of Anambra State,” Nwosu wrote, adding that the list of purported delegates had been altered several times and only posted at the party secretariat just hours before the primary was set to begin.

Nwosu also expressed his dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Labour Party, particularly following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on April 4, 2025, which ousted Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party. Nwosu underscored that any actions taken by Abure’s administration, including those related to the Anambra governorship primaries, were now questionable due to the court’s decision. “The implication is that anything Barr. Abure superintended since his tenure expired cannot stand judicial scrutiny,” he remarked in his letter.

The aspirant went on to state that, given the flawed nature of the primary process, continuing his participation would compromise his personal integrity and his principles. “I am convinced that my participation in the primary will lend credence to illegality, erosion of due process and also offend my sense of integrity, Christian values, and principles,” Nwosu said.

In his letter, Nwosu also appealed to his supporters, campaign staff, and well-wishers, assuring them that his decision to withdraw was in the best interest of fairness and justice. “I fervently believe that my teeming supporters, campaign staff, friends, and well-wishers in Anambra State, Nigeria, and beyond will understand and appreciate my decision,” he wrote, adding that he remained committed to participating in future political processes that were credible, transparent, and fair.
