Anambra Government Enforces Strict ID Checks for Tenants, Hotel Guests
The Anambra State government has issued a directive requiring hotel owners and landlords to verify the identities of guests and tenants as part of efforts to enhance security in the state.
The decision follows the recent discovery of over 30 graves and a shrine at a hotel in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, raising concerns about criminal activities in hospitality and residential spaces.
In a statement released on Friday, Commissioner for Information Law Mefor emphasized that the new measure is aimed at curbing insecurity and ensuring a safer environment. Hotel owners and landlords are now required to collect valid identification from guests and tenants and submit a properly filled form, along with a photocopy of the ID, to the president-general of their community. The president-general will then forward the documents to the local government mayor and the state government.
Hotel guests must present a government-issued National Identity Card, international passport, or voter’s card. Non-compliance will result in the forfeiture of the hotel facility and possible prosecution.
Additionally, president-generals of town unions are now designated as chairpersons of the security committee of the ‘Agunaechemba’ security outfit in their communities. They are required to oversee its operations and submit detailed monthly reports to the state government. Failure to comply will lead to suspension and possible sanctions.
The government also encouraged residents to report criminal activities and announced a ₦5 million reward for anyone providing valuable information that enhances security. Authorities urged all stakeholders to support the initiative to foster a safer Anambra State.
