Alleged Lagos Assembly Invasion: DSS Writes AIT, Channels TV, Demands Retraction, Apology
The Department of State Services (DSS) has accused two television stations, Africa Independent Television (AIT) of DAAR Communications Plc and Channels Television, of broadcasting false, defamatory, and malicious reports regarding its activities. The agency has demanded a public retraction and apology, warning that failure to comply within seven days could result in both criminal and civil lawsuits against the stations.
In a letter dated February 17, 2025, and signed by its legal representative, Chief Ayodeji Adedipe (SAN), the DSS refuted allegations that it had invaded the Lagos State House of Assembly or attempted to prevent lawmakers, including Speaker Mojisola Meranda, from accessing the chamber for plenary. The DSS stated that its presence at the Assembly on February 17 was based on a formal request from the Deputy Clerk to support security operatives and maintain order amid tensions.
According to the DSS, the television stations broadcast reports without verifying the circumstances surrounding its deployment at the Assembly complex. The agency criticized the coverage as misleading and harmful to its reputation, stating that the reports falsely portrayed it as acting in a reckless and forceful manner akin to a “Gestapo” operation.
The security agency emphasized its role as a responsible institution committed to upholding law and order. It insisted that the reports damaged its credibility and called for immediate corrective action from the broadcasters. If the demanded retraction and apology are not issued within the stipulated timeframe, the DSS warned that legal action would follow to seek redress for the alleged defamation.
