Alarming Rise in Incest Cases Sparks Concerns in Nigeria
In recent months, Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing surge in cases of incest, shedding light on a deeply unsettling societal issue. Shocking incidents, including a daughter fighting her father’s remarriage due to a romantic relationship and a mother seeking help to end an incestuous affair with her son, have surfaced on social media.
The stories range from a woman deceivingly manipulated into an incestuous relationship with her son to another attempting to conceive with her own child to secure her second marriage. These cases underscore a troubling trend where familial boundaries are violated, leading to devastating consequences for those involved.
In July 2023, a 46-year-old man was arrested for allegedly impregnating his two daughters in Ikwa community, further exposing the gravity of the issue. The daughters bravely reported the abuse, revealing a shocking attempt by the father and his wife to conceal the pregnancies.
Regrettably, such incidents are not isolated. In March of the same year, a 43-year-old man was arrested for impregnating his 19-year-old daughter, who faced threats if she dared to disclose the abuse. These cases highlight a distressing pattern of familial misconduct that extends beyond a few isolated incidents.
Attempting to unravel the roots of this immoral behavior, Dr. Leonard Okonkwo, a Consultant Psychologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, suggested that societal norms and cultural values have weakened over time. The erosion of these checks, coupled with an individualistic lifestyle, contributes to an environment where such acts can occur without detection.
Dr. Okonkwo also pointed to the impact of fantasy propagated by certain cultural influences, encouraging individuals to perceive incestuous relationships as acceptable. He emphasized that despite these distorted beliefs, societal norms and laws still label such behavior as criminal.
The rise in incest cases raises questions about the mental health implications for those involved. Dr. Okonkwo stressed that while not all mental illnesses lead to insanity, abnormal behaviors such as incestuous relationships require intervention and support.
As Nigeria grapples with this disturbing trend, there is an urgent need for societal awareness, strengthened cultural values, and a proactive approach to mental health to address the root causes and prevent further harm within families.
