Alabama Woman with Rare Double Uterus Welcomes Twin Girls on Different Days

In a remarkable tale of odds-defying motherhood, Kelsey Hatcher, a 32-year-old woman from Alabama with a rare condition known as “uterus didelphys,” gave birth to twin girls on separate days, sharing the extraordinary journey on her Instagram account “doubleuhatchlings.”

The twins, named Roxi Layla and Rebel Laken, arrived just in time for the holidays. Roxi was born on Tuesday at 7:49 pm, followed by Rebel on Wednesday at 6:09 am, both weighing over seven pounds (3.2 kilos). Despite doctors estimating a Christmas due date, the sisters made a timely entrance after 20 hours of combined Labour.

Hatcher, who discovered her condition at the age of 17, underwent a routine eight-week ultrasound in May, revealing the astonishing news of a fetus in each of her uteruses. Dr. Shweta Patel, the obstetrician-gynecologist overseeing Hatcher’s care at UAB’s Women & Infants Center, emphasized the rarity of such pregnancies, stating, “two babies in two uteri were a true medical surprise.”

The congenital anomaly of Hatcher’s dicavitary twin pregnancy meant each baby had its own womb, sac, placenta, and umbilical cord, reducing the risk of pre-term birth. Hatcher expressed her disbelief, recalling the ultrasound moment when the technician discovered the second baby, stating, “We just could not believe it.”

The odds of a double pregnancy in double wombs were revealed to be one in 50 million, with the last widely known case reported in Bangladesh in 2019. Hatcher, now discharged from the hospital along with her daughters, plans to share more details about the unique delivery in the future.
