Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Lawyer for Brutalizing Wife; Charges Pending
Barrister Ekere Ebong, a Nigerian lawyer, has been apprehended by the Akwa Ibom Police Command following a disturbing viral video that captured him physically abusing his wife.
On Monday, it was confirmed that Ebong would face charges shortly, according to sources within the Akwa Ibom Police Command.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, condemned Ebong’s actions on Sunday, expressing her disbelief at the brutal scene. In a statement on her official Twitter handle, she emphasized that such behavior cannot be tolerated in a ‘Renewed Hope’ government.
Reacting to the distressing video, Ohanenye declared, “The federal Ministry of Women Affairs @FMWA_ng has ordered the arrest of this demonized lawyer Mr. Ebong, who must face the law squarely. I promise this act cannot be swept under the carpet, even if the woman decides she doesn’t want her husband to be sued due to family pressure. The man must face the law, as justice will have its way.”
The viral footage depicted Ebong physically assaulting his wife, leaving her with visible injuries. A concerned neighbor revealed that the abuse had been ongoing for four years, stating, “No be today, I have lived in this compound for four years, every night he would be beating this woman.”
As the legal proceedings unfold, the nation watches closely to ensure justice is served in this alarming case of domestic violence.
