Again, Five-Storey Building Collapses in Onitsha, Anambra

A five-storey building under construction on Basden Street in Fegge, Onitsha, Anambra, collapsed in the early hours of Sunday. The Anambra Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing that the collapse occurred while construction workers were on the final floor.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command Public Relations Officer, stated, “Operatives are currently there now, though the details are still sketchy. As soon as I get the full details, I will get back to you.”

An anonymous witness shared that the building, intended for commercial purposes upon completion, crumbled starting from the fifth floor. The structure was in its final stages, with the fifth floor almost completed before the collapse. Tragically, two workers are reportedly trapped inside, while those injured have been rushed to undisclosed hospitals.

Chinyere Nwoyethe, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, mentioned they were yet to be informed about the collapsed building. This unfortunate incident follows closely on the heels of another building collapse in Ochanja Market, Onitsha, where five lives were lost just two weeks ago.
