Aftermath of Military Operations: North-West Nigeria Witnesses Uptick in Terrorist Onslaughts
Residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states in North-west Nigeria are grappling with an upswing in terror activities following recent military offensives that resulted in the elimination of numerous terrorists in the region.
The intensified attacks come in the aftermath of military authorities reporting the successful killing of several terrorists and the rescue of abducted victims in the North-west. The operations also involved the destruction of terrorists’ houses and camps.
According to Basharu Guyawa, a researcher on banditry and a resident of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State, the terrorists, though significantly impacted by the military offensive, are regrouping and launching retaliatory attacks on local communities.
The attacks in the North-west are distinct from the recent violence in Plateau, north-central Nigeria, where over 100 people were killed on Christmas Eve.
In the latest incidents, terrorists ambushed and killed four members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps in Faskari Local Government Area. Additionally, 16 people, including women and children, were killed in an attack on Kurya, a community in Rabah Local Government on Christmas day.
The violence continues with incidents such as the killing of four traders returning from the Jibia weekly market and the abduction of several motorists on the Gusau-Sokoto highway. Communities in Zamfara State also faced multiple attacks, leading to abductions and displacements.
Experts emphasize the need for improved coordination and simultaneous operations in affected states to effectively address the security challenges in the North-west. Analysts like James Barnett suggest enhanced interagency coordination and a focus on local knowledge to tailor solutions to the diverse security issues.
Retired military captain Abubakar Ibrahim calls for synergy between security agencies fighting banditry, advocating for sustained, simultaneous operations until the eradication of terrorists in affected regions.
Despite repeated attempts, the spokesperson of Operation Hadarin Daji, the military operation in the North-west, Ibrahim Yahaya, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
