Afenifere Commends Tinubu-led FG for Reducing Rice Prices
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has applauded the Federal Government’s recent initiative to lower the price of rice. On Wednesday, Afenifere praised the government’s decision to offer 50kg bags of rice for N40,000, a significant reduction from the current market price of N70,000.
The Federal Government’s announcement, made on Monday, is part of its strategy to address concerns leading up to a planned hunger protest scheduled to commence today (Thursday). In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Jare Ajayi, Afenifere expressed approval of the government’s efforts and urged protest organizers to reconsider their plans for the sake of peace.
“The government has not only started distributing 20 trucks of rice per state but has also set the price at N40,000 per bag, down from over N70,000. Reports suggest an additional 10 trucks have been dispatched, bringing the total to 30 trucks per state,” Ajayi said.
Several states, including Katsina and Bayelsa, have already received their rice shipments and have begun distribution. Afenifere emphasized that these actions reflect the government’s commitment to addressing pressing national issues, particularly food security.
The organization also called on President Bola Tinubu to expedite measures to support farmers, including effective use of the recently approved N2 trillion Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan, which focuses on agricultural development.
