AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Decline Travel for Algeria Match Over Unpaid Bonuses
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have refused to travel to Marrakech for their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Algeria due to unpaid bonuses.
The development was reported by BBC Africa journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco.
Nigeria are scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday evening in the quarter-final of the 2025 AFCON. However, the players and coaching staff have declined to continue preparations, citing the non-payment of bonuses earned during the tournament.
The Super Eagles recorded wins over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage, before defeating Mozambique 4–0 in the Round of 16. Despite the results, bonuses for the four matches remain unpaid.
As a result, the players have decided not to travel or take part in training sessions until the issue is resolved. The situation puts Nigeria’s participation in the quarter-final in doubt, with hours left before the scheduled fixture.
