Abia State Government Restricts Tricycle Operations in Aba and Umuahia

In a move to enhance security, the Abia State Government has announced new operational hours for tricycles and motorcycles in Aba and Umuahia. Effective from July 1, 2024, these vehicles will be restricted from operating between 7 PM and 6 AM daily.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, during a news conference held at his office. This decision follows a meeting with key stakeholders in the state’s transport sector.

Commissioner Nwachukwu highlighted the primary objective of this restriction as a measure to safeguard the lives and property of residents. He cited recent incidents of pickpocketing and robbery involving tricycles, underscoring the urgency of addressing these security concerns.

“The state government has decided to curb the operations of the criminals who use this means of transport to perpetrate criminal activities,” Nwachukwu stated.

To ensure compliance and enhance security, a committee has been established, chaired by Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd), the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security. The committee includes various government officials and will oversee the compulsory registration of all tricycles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles. This measure aims to accurately identify the owners and operators of these vehicles.

Nwachukwu also mentioned that the government would review the restriction as needed, based on its effectiveness and feedback from the community.

The decision has received backing from executive members of various transport unions who attended the meeting, expressing their support for the government’s efforts to improve security through these new regulations.
