A Week After Impeachment Threat, Rivers Assembly Fails to Reconvene
The Rivers State House of Assembly did not reconvene on Thursday as scheduled, one week after adjourning its last plenary session.
The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had during its first sitting of 2026 initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The lawmakers cited allegations of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the Assembly complex and expenditure of state funds without legislative approval. The session, held last Thursday, was adjourned to January 15, 2026.
However, as of noon on Thursday, there was no indication that the House would resume sitting. A correspondent who visited the venue— the conference hall of the Assembly’s legislative quarters along Aba Road— observed no activity suggesting a reconvening.
No official explanation has been issued for the failure to resume, and the Assembly has not announced a new date for continuation of plenary.
Attempts to obtain clarification from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to his phone had not been returned as of the time this report was filed.
