A Recap of Tinubu Government’s Five Key Commitments to Nigerian Workers
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government laid out five crucial promises to the Nigerian workforce during a high-profile meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday. This crucial gathering brought together top officials from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with the aim of finding effective solutions to the ongoing dispute sparked by the removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
The commitments made by the Federal Government in this pivotal meeting are as follows:
Provisional Wage Increase: The Federal Government took the bold step of announcing a provisional wage increment for all treasury-paid federal government employees. Initially set at N25,000, this wage increment has now been increased to N35,000. This boost in income is set to be in effect for six months.
CNG Buses for Improved Public Transportation: Recognizing the challenges brought about by the removal of PMS subsidy, the government pledged its dedication to expediting the provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. This move aims to alleviate the strain on public transportation systems.
Support for Micro and Small-Scale Enterprises: In a bid to bolster the nation’s economic landscape, the Federal Government committed to providing much-needed financial support to micro and small-scale enterprises. This support is expected to invigorate these vital sectors of the economy.
VAT Exemption on Diesel: As part of the relief measures, the government has chosen to waive Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel for the upcoming six months. This decision is expected to offer some respite to various industries that rely heavily on diesel for their operations.
Direct Assistance to Households: The Federal Government announced its intention to initiate payments of N75,000 to 15 million households across the nation. This financial assistance will be disbursed at a rate of N25,000 per month and will span a three-month period, commencing from October to December 2023.
This critical meeting, convened to address pressing issues in the wake of the PMS subsidy removal, will resume discussions today, Monday, October 2, 2023. The promises made during this gathering signify a significant step towards addressing the concerns of Nigerian workers and citizens at large. The nation eagerly awaits the implementation of these commitments and their potential impact on the economy and livelihoods of its people.
