2027: Tinubu’s Minister Set to Resign

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign from his position in the coming days as he prepares to enter the 2027 governorship race in Bauchi State, according to sources familiar with the matter.

His anticipated exit follows a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to step down by March 31, 2026. The directive was communicated in a statement by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Tuggar’s planned resignation comes shortly after the 2026 national convention of the All Progressives Congress, where most members of the party’s National Working Committee retained their positions unopposed. The development has shifted attention to cabinet members believed to be positioning for electoral contests.

Political allies from Bauchi who attended the convention say preparations for Tuggar’s formal declaration are at an advanced stage, pointing to increasing support for his prospective candidacy.

Before his ministerial appointment in 2023, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023. He previously represented the Gamawa federal constituency in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2011.

With the resignation deadline approaching, focus remains on other appointees expected to comply as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
