2027 Polls: “Scheduling Elections During Ramadan May Limit Participation,” Bashir Ahmad Tells INEC

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the timetable for the 2027 general elections, citing potential conflicts with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

INEC announced on Friday that presidential and National Assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are slated for March 6, 2027. The announcement was made by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan at a news conference in Abuja.

In a post on X, Ahmad pointed out that both election days fall within Ramadan, a period when many Muslims dedicate time to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection. He warned that this timing could affect voter participation.

“Scheduling such a critical national exercise during Ramadan may present challenges for a large segment of the population,” Ahmad said, noting that many reduce engagement in demanding activities during fasting.

He recommended adjusting the election timetable to ensure broader participation and convenience for all citizens, framing the suggestion as a step toward inclusiveness and national cohesion.
