2027 Elections: Opposition Divisions Give APC Early Advantage

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, divisions within opposition parties are widening, giving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a clear advantage. With roughly a year remaining, internal disputes, legal challenges, and fractured coordination have slowed preparations for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), while the APC has begun rolling out its election roadmap.

Last week, the APC became the first party to publicly release a timetable for the 2027 elections. The document, signed by National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, schedules the party’s national convention for March 25–28, 2026. Party insiders say the early planning is aimed at consolidating internal cohesion and giving prospective candidates time to prepare.

The Labour Party continues to face uncertainty despite INEC recognizing Senator Esther Nenadi-Usman as acting national chairman. The decision, based on a court order, sidelined the faction led by Comrade Julius Abure, but loyalists insist the dispute could be revisited by a superior court. Critics of the caretaker committee say it has failed to conduct congresses and organize a national convention within the required timeframe, slowing mobilisation and weakening the party’s capacity to build on its 2023 momentum.

The PDP remains entangled in leadership disputes before the Court of Appeal, which have stalled national and state activities. Rival factions continue to claim key offices, delaying congresses and reconciliation efforts. Defections and fragmentation have reduced its influence, with the party dropping from 13 governors in 2023 to four. Factional national chairman Dr. Kabiru Turaki expressed confidence that pending appeals would be consolidated and resolved, but party insiders warn that prolonged uncertainty could hinder compliance with INEC deadlines.

The ADC, positioning itself as a hub for a potential opposition coalition, has postponed ward congresses to focus on a 50-member policy and manifesto committee. Divisions between supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi have complicated efforts to present a united front. A source familiar with coalition talks warned that ongoing disputes over leadership and candidacy could undermine opposition efforts.

Defections to the APC, including governors and prominent figures, have further weakened the opposition. Analysts attribute these moves to doubts over credible primaries, campaign funding, and party cohesion. Political scientist Emmanuel Edache said opposition parties appear driven more by personalities than ideology, warning that internal competition may undermine efforts to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

Chief Peter Ameh, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), urged opposition groups to unite behind a single candidate and protect voter turnout, warning that without cohesion 2027 could be “a lost cause.” Meanwhile, INEC has yet to release the official election schedule and stressed that any timelines circulating outside the statutory framework are not official. The commission confirmed that notice of election will be published no later than 360 days before the polls, and pending electoral reforms may further affect party preparations.
