2027 Elections: New Political Party Emerges as Northern Leaders Transform LND into National Platform
Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau and members of the League of Northern Democrats (LND) have announced plans to transform their organization into a political party. The group, which began as a pro-northern platform advocating for good governance, aims to evolve into the League of National Democrats with support from allies in Southern Nigeria.
The LND’s transformation seeks to challenge the dominance of Nigeria’s two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to the group, both parties have failed to address the country’s critical challenges or demonstrate any intention to do so.
In a statement released in Abuja, LND Convener Dr. Umar Ardo criticized the APC and PDP for perpetuating governance practices devoid of patriotism and sacrifice. Ardo noted that the parties have devolved into tools for self-service, fostering dishonesty and leadership imposition driven by personal ambition rather than merit or democratic consensus.
“Their internal systems reward loyalty over competence, perpetuating governance that prioritizes patronage over public interest. Both parties have consistently produced leaders more interested in consolidating power than addressing the socio-economic realities of Nigerians,” Ardo said.
He argued that this pattern has deepened poverty, heightened insecurity, and eroded public trust, leaving the nation in a state of despair and cynicism. Ardo described Nigeria’s persistent issues—endemic poverty, insecurity, corruption, institutional decay, and socio-economic stagnation—as direct consequences of poor governance.
Echoing sentiments expressed in a New Year’s message by former APC National Vice Chairman (North West) Salihu Lukman, Ardo called for decisive action to break the cycle of ineffective governance. He stated that the formation of an alternative political platform, like the proposed League of National Democrats, is both timely and necessary to meet the aspirations of Nigerians seeking genuine change.
The LND envisions itself as a beacon of hope for a nation at a crossroads, committed to democratic values and institutional renewal. The group plans to initiate a similar process in Southern Nigeria, ultimately merging efforts to create the League of National Democrats as a registered political party.
Ardo emphasized that this new political entity would prioritize patriotism, honesty, and democratic values while offering an inclusive and forward-thinking approach to rebuilding Nigeria’s political system. Unlike the APC and PDP, the League of National Democrats aims to deliver the credible and transformative leadership Nigerians desperately need.
