2026 WCQ: Finidi George Explains Boniface’s Absence Against South Africa

Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has clarified his decision not to play Victor Boniface in the 1-1 draw against South Africa on Thursday.

With Victor Osimhen sidelined due to injury, many anticipated that Boniface, a forward for Bayer Leverkusen, would step in as his replacement. However, Boniface remained on the bench throughout the match.

Addressing the media’s queries, Finidi George emphasized the need for professional discretion in team decisions. “Allow us to do our jobs,” he stated. “We wanted to introduce Boniface and Moffi, but Semi had a knock, and we had to take him off and bring in Moffi and Onyedika instead.”

Finidi underscored the challenge of balancing public expectations with strategic decisions. “The fans and media will call for different players, but if they don’t perform well, the same voices will demand their removal. We need the freedom to manage the team effectively.”

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are set to face Benin Republic on Monday, with fans eagerly anticipating the next line-up.
