2023 Election: Wike Criticizes EU’s Report
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly criticized the European Union (EU) for its report on the 2023 Nigerian presidential election. Wike voiced his discontent during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, who paid him a working visit in his office on Monday.
Wike’s primary contention with the EU’s report lies in its failure to accurately represent the true state of the last election held in Nigeria. He argued that the report created a misleading impression in the minds of voters, particularly in Rivers State.
The EU, designated as an observer during the election, had presented its final report on the Nigerian general elections in June through Chief Observer Barry Andres. The report highlighted six priority areas along with recommendations.
However, Wike contended that Nigerian laws and circumstances differ significantly from those of the European Union, and as such, the comparison was not appropriate. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that reports accurately reflect the realities on the ground, especially in a democracy like Nigeria.
Wike expressed his disagreement, saying, “I didn’t agree with the European Union over the last report on the election in Nigeria. They are supposed to observe. Nigerian laws can’t be the same as EU laws because they have different environments.”
The Minister further pointed out discrepancies between the EU’s report and the actual events that took place in Rivers State during the election. He raised concerns about portraying those who believe in and practice democracy as individuals who do not understand it.
Wike urged foreign partners to focus on strategic development initiatives that can contribute to the growth of the Nigerian economy, emphasizing cooperation and agreement on specific areas of development in the Federal Capital Territory and the nation as a whole.
In response, EU Ambassador Samuela Isopi clarified that the report had been compiled by independent observers and was not reflective of her own operations. She pledged her commitment to working with Minister Wike to enhance development in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving strategic development goals.
