15 Rescued, Several Feared Trapped as Building Collapses in Lagos

At least 15 people have been rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday at No. 54 Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, Oyingbo, Lagos. The incident, which occurred around 12:20 a.m. on October 27, 2025, caused widespread panic as emergency responders and residents raced to save those trapped under the rubble.

Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside other emergency teams, have been working through the night in a coordinated search and rescue operation. The building, according to reports, had earlier been marked as distressed and occupants were warned to vacate before it eventually gave way.

Confirming the development, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the rescue operation is ongoing. “It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which had reportedly been marked as distressed before collapsing on the occupants. So far, 15 people—seven adult males, four adult females, and four children—have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries,” she said.

Adeseye added that the injured victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for medical attention. As of 6:00 a.m., no fatalities had been confirmed, but several people were still feared trapped beneath the debris.

The collapse threw the entire Oyingbo area into confusion as residents and sympathisers joined emergency workers in frantic efforts to clear the rubble and rescue more victims.
