14 Dead as Bus Collides with Tanker on Lapai-Bida Highway
Fourteen people lost their lives in a fatal road accident on the Lapai-Agaie-Bida Federal Highway in Niger State on Saturday, February 22, 2025. The crash, which occurred at 10:59 am between Kusobogi and Nami, involved a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Minna to Agaie and a DAF tanker en route from Lagos to Kaduna.
The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kumar Tsukwam, confirmed the incident and attributed the cause to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking. According to the FRSC report, the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus attempted to overtake another vehicle at high speed and collided head-on with the oncoming tanker.
The impact of the collision was devastating, leading to the immediate deaths of 14 passengers. Among the deceased were five females, one male child, and eight males. Six other male passengers sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai for urgent medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue.
In response to the tragic accident, Tsukwam urged motorists to adhere strictly to road safety regulations, avoid reckless driving, and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent further loss of lives.
